Essential Fatty Acids and Chronic Fatigue

In June 2005 the "British Journal of Psychiatrists" pubished an article that concluded:

"There is good evidence that psychiatric illness associated with depletion of EFAs and crucially, that supplementation can result in clinical amerlioration. As well as challenging traditional views of aetiology and therapeutics in psychiatry, the clinical trial data may herald a simple, safe and effective adjunct to our standard treatments for many disabling conditions"

• Research has linked essential fatty acid (EFA) deficiencies with a wide range of psychiatric disorders including depression, anxiety, CFS/ME, biopolar disorder, alzheimers and schizophrenia.
• Deficiency can be reversed by increasing the intake of EPA & DHA Omega 3s fats in the diet for a period of time and then maintaining regular intake.
• Some people may have problems absorbing EFAs from the gut, which could exacerbate the level of the deficiency.
• EPA Omega 3 is vital for the maintainence of healthy brain function as well as many other functions including circulation, joints, cells, skin, hair & nails.

Getting Enough Omega 3

• In "Chronic Fatigue Syndrome" Dr Basant Puri suggests a dose of 2g of EPA Omega 3 per day for a minimum of 12 weeks (see book for more details).

Choosing the Right Oil ?

• Humans can make DHA from EPA, but not EPA from DHA. Therefore, supplements with higher levels of EPA than DHA are considered most effective.
• The richest source of EPA & DHA is found in oily fish.
• Flax Oil/Hemp Oil is rich in ALA Omega 3, but the body has to convert this into EPA/DHA and we're not very efficient at converting ALA to EPA! In conclusion, unless you're a vegan/vegetarian we'd recommend you choose to supplement using an EPA & DHA based product.
