Low HDL cholesterol linked to cognitive impairment

Low serum concentrations of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol are associated with cognitive impairment and dementia. Total cholesterol, triglycerides, and low-density lipoprotein and HDL cholesterol were measured in 561 85-year old individuals. Mini-Mental State Examination scores were lower only in those individuals with low HDL serum concentrations. “These findings are of great clinical importance because they suggest that increasing HDL cholesterol rather than lowering total cholesterol might prevent the development of cognitive impairment and dementia”, the authors conclude

(Ann Neurol 2002; 51: 1531–34).
